Maintained at Zero Child Mortality in Five Municipalities of Holguín

The Maternal and Child Health Program (PAMI) puts all its efforts into ensuring the well-being of the pregnant woman and her baby, an action that translates into results. The clearest example is the infant mortality rate at zero reached by five municipalities in Holguin.

This was stated by Dr. Katia María Ochoa Aguilera, Provincial Director of Health in the territory: "For the Holguin health system, the work carried out by the PAMI is a priority, which is why today it is achieved in

the municipalities of Gibara, Antilla, Calixto García, Urban Noris and Frank Country a zero in infant mortality. "

The province for about ten years exhibits annually a rate below four, indicator only comparable with that of first world countries. Such results are obtained thanks to the work dynamics designed by the public health system in the territory, which is located at the epicenter of attention to this program.

Regarding the situation of pregnant mothers, mortality in the province is also maintained at zero so far this year, a merit that is due to the professionalism and hard work of specialists in charge of critical maternal care, who achieve reverse complex situations and serious states of some women after giving birth.

In our health system pregnant women have the guarantee of medical treatment and the existence of specialized centers to ensure their health and that of their baby, among them the five maternity homes set up in the province for this purpose.

Today, maternal homes are established as primary care units specializing in the care of pregnant women, whose social purpose is to prevent possible complications that could put their lives at risk.

The attention to pregnant women also includes follow-up in consultations and the frequent performance of diagnostic tests to determine possible congenital malformations or diseases in the product of their conception. On the other hand, in babies the attention does not stop at birth, but after birth, vaccines against multiple eradicated diseases are applied and tests are carried out to detect around six diseases.

For the PAMI, timely monitoring of pregnant women and their children is an essential priority and at the same time evidence of the comprehensive medical care guaranteed by our social system.
