University of Holguín promotes scientific development programs

The University of Holguín, more than half a century old,  has a special area where various research programs are developed, including what will be the science and technology park, which is currently in project phase in order to expand its links with local businesses in the territory.

The PhD Ana de Lourdes Torralbas, general director of the economic area of ​​the educational institution, stressed the main objective of the facility is to work as a mediator among the academic, governmental and productive sectors, for advice and management of local development projects and commercialization of results in the investigations.

The center has several plans, among other programs, aimed at researches related to sport development so as protection of electrical connections of refrigeration equipment with the collaboration of the provincial company of local industries and that of engineering and technical services.

The facility will also enable to develop other researches such as the manufacture of metal molds to speed up the housing construction process, with the engineering company and technical services, besides the creation of a computer system to improve the management of rent houses in the eastern province of Holguín.

The scientific association is located at the university branch Oscar Lucero Moya, where the projects for the premises of the research park have been accomplished, whose construction value is estimated at around half a million pesos, mentioned the director.

Currently, in the areas provisionally chosen for that purpose, there are concentrated engineering majors, and they have for now the required infrastructure for scientific and technical development considering the different educational programs.

International Culinary Festival begins in Cuba

As an invitation to discuss the best of Cuban cuisine and worldwide, the 7th edition of the International Culinary Festival begins in Havana (Culinary 2019), until next October 18th.

The event will present around 148 participants of 26 countries and 150 Cubans, representatives of tourist facilities throughout the country, as well as research institutes related to gastronomic activity.

Eddy Fernández, president of the Culinary Federation of Cuba, declared at a press conference that this will be a right moment to celebrate dates of great significance for this sector, among which are the day of national culture, and that of Cuban cuisine, as well as the world food day.

Under the motto "the kitchen, identity and cultural heritage", they will discuss topics considering new trends in gastronomy, and what Cuba is currently doing in this branch, which also constitutes an opportunity to show the qualities of Cuban cuisine.

There are confirmed 18 papers for the scientific program of the event, so as 21 master lessons, which consist of introducing to the audience an original dish from each present country.

There will be also a lounge for artistic kitchen where professionals will make a representation of some works of Cuban artists such as Zaida del Río, Alfredo Sosa Bravo, Diana Balboa, José Omar Torres and Carlos del Toro.

Among other topics to be held at the festival, there is healthy and sustainable cuisine so as the use of chocolate, coffee, wine and tobacco in gastronomy; research works from universities and scientific centers of the country will be also presented .

Culinary 2019 will have the honor to welcome several personalities from the cooking world such as Diego Silva Leman, president of the Association of Gastronomic Restaurateurs of America and the world; as well as executives and members of the World Association of Chefs Societies.

During the event a group of 20 children from interest circles linked to gastronomic activity, will make a presentation of dishes and non alcoholic drinks, as a way to foster this culture in the little ones.

On October 16th, on the occasion of the World Food Day, Marcelo Resende, a representative in Cuba of the World Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), will participate in the event, where conversations and other related activities will be offered regarding the theme of the day.

Culinary 2019 is sponsored by the Ministries of Internal Trade, Tourism, Food Industry, Culture, Agriculture and Public Health. It also counts on Havanatur, the World Association of Chefs Societies and the Association of Bartenders.

Holguín enjoys the International Craft Fair

The International Craft Fair Iberoarte 2019 was officially inaugurated at the Expo Holguín fairgrounds of this eastern city, with a wide participation of foreign artists from countries such as Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico and Spain.  

A cultural gala by young members of the Holguín Lyric Theater Rodrigo Prats was the opening of this 18th edition that will run until October 27; the eastern city has been permanent seat since 2001, sponsored by the Cuban Fund of Cultural Assets.

Yanay Guerra, an artisan from Peru, said exclusively that it is not her first time in this internationally recognized event, since she enjoys the Holguín people a lot, who highly request the proposals at her stand.

Joaquín de Jesús Teodosio, from Trinidad, territory of the province of Sancti Spítirus, considered as Artisan City of the World, to which the currenty Iberoarte fair is dedicated, stressed that he feels excited to be able to exhibit textile confections with hand-made embroidery.

María Zulema arrived from Ecuador, with offers of shirts for men adorned as the typical style of that country, children's clothing and beach coats for women, all made with fresh cotton fabrics, designed to be exported to warm countries like Cuba.

The second most important fair of this type in the nation after FIART Habana counts on 44 representatives from provinces such as Santiago de Cuba, Cienfuegos, Sancti Spíritus, Havana and Matanzas, who offer varieties of manual works that distinguish national traditions.

Other scenarios for the commercialization of the products will be the cultural center Plaza de la Marqueta and Bayado store, located downtown.

The agenda includes business meetings, fashion shows, plastic arts exhibitions and the presentation of the latest book by the Holguín publisher Cuadernos Papiro, notable for working with manufactured paper.

At the end of the event, the Iberoarte awards will be presented, which recognize the authenticity of the samples in several categories, including better stand design and better fashion show.

Ernesto Santiesteban Velázquez, first secretary of the provincial committee of the Communist Party of Cuba in Holguín, and Julio César Estupiñán Rodríguez, president of the Assembly of People’s Power in the eastern territory attended the opening.
