Holguín University of Medical Sciences strengthens quality in educational processes
Through the accreditation of postgraduate specialties, the University of Medical Sciences Mariana Grajales de Holguín, one with the highest enrollment in Cuba, consolidates the quality of its training processes in this year 2021 as one of the priorities of Cuban higher education.
Dr. Adelmar Agüero, methodologist from the House of Higher Studies, specified that the evaluation has already concluded in natural and traditional medicine, imageology and nephrology, with encouraging results to continue perfecting the improvement plans in these branches of medicine.
He stressed that the accreditation is carried out virtually through videoconferences and the face-to-face spaces strictly comply with the sanitary standards established for the control of COVID-19; besides, it will also include adult psychiatry and pediatric surgery, according to the conditions of the epidemiological context.
He stated that among the aspects to be evaluated by the National Accreditation Board, the scientific production, improvement of the life quality of patients and the insertion in the work objectives of the Ministry of Public Health stand out, in a period of five years .
Arturo Arjona, a first-degree specialist in nephrology, highlighted the importance of training young generations to guarantee quality care in the hemodialysis service, even in the midst of the pandemic.
Also Mayelín Cruz, coordinator of the chair of natural and traditional medicine, stated that the accreditation also has a social impact, materialized in a better training of postgraduate specialists, who then provide their assistance in polyclinics and family doctor's offices.
The Holguín University of Medical Sciences has 62 specialties at its different levels of undergraduate and graduate education, which continue their programs in the midst of the outbreak of the new coronavirus, through alternatives provided by the new information and communication technologies.
The accreditation process includes the application of an external evaluation system, aimed at publicly recognizing that an institution or program meets certain quality requirements, according to the regulations of the System of Evaluation and Accreditation of Postgraduate Specialties of the Republic of Cuba, according to publication of the Electronic Medical Journal of the Caribbean island.
